Total Classroom Initiative Capital Project Aims To Enhance Learning Experience
At a regular board meeting on February 28, 2022, the District 225 Board of Education reviewed the ‘Total Classroom’ Initiative Capital Project that is slated to begin during the summer of 2022, pending a vote of approval on March 14, 2022.
The $3.8 million dollar project aims to create an adaptable learning and teaching experience for our students and teachers by maximizing the space for comfort, engagement and flexibility. An additional goal is to create a classroom environment focused on well-being by designing each new element with a lens on belonging, optimism and vitality.
District 225 Associate Superintendent Dr. R.J. Gravel said, “Seven years ago, our students and teachers commenced on a journey to redefine the classroom experience through active learning spaces. Through an incremental design process rich in student and teacher feedback, we are excited to implement the total classroom experience for the majority of our student’s learning spaces by August 2022.”
All District 225 classrooms will be remodeled to update and enhance our learning environments for the next generation. Once complete, you will find new LED lighting, flooring, painting, vertical surfaces and furniture throughout Glenbrook North and Glenbrook South. In total 86 core academic learning spaces at GBN and 110 at GBS will be modernized.
District 225 Superintendent Dr. Charles Johns said, “throughout the process, we have explored how furniture can have a transformative impact on learning and revolutionize instructional practices for the next generation.”
The idea for the ‘Total Classroom’ initiative began back in October 2021 during a Faculty Committee meeting, where the administration shared its plan following feedback received by the committee.
At this time, the District anticipates, aside from 33 science classrooms, all core academic learning spaces will be completed before the start of the 2022-2023 school year. Given the unique nature of science classrooms, designs are underway and are anticipated to be evaluated during the 2022-2023 school year and completed during the summer of 2023.
Study hall, peer group and resource center spaces will also undergo renovation. During the summer of 2022, GBN will see 16 spaces redesigned and GBS will see 17. These areas will receive updated lighting and flooring. The furniture and vertical spaces in these rooms currently meet the needs. Touch-up paint will be done on an as-need basis.
The board anticipates a vote to approve the project at the March 14, 2022 board meeting.
