Glenbrook Story: Kyle MacDonald

Glenbrook Story: Kyle MacDonald
Glenbrook Communications

Glenbrook North Senior Kyle MacDonald has been singing for as long as he can remember.

“I grew up with my sisters who are constantly singing. My two older sisters and my mom who loves singing too. So I’ve always been a singer,” MacDonald said.

MacDonald joined the choir in sixth grade while attending Northbrook Junior High.

“It’s just very stress relieving. It just gives me the freedom to express myself and it’s fun. I just like singing,” MacDonald said.

His musical interests did not distract him from also playing football during elementary school. Freshman year of high school, MacDonald went to both GBN football coach Matt Purdy and Instructional Supervisor for Fine Arts Chad Davidson about wanting to make the two activities work.

“The big thing for him is his communication. This summer we had a five week camp for football and he came to me and said he was going to miss 4-5 days he had to go to a theater event. It was a great opportunity for him and I gave him a full blessing and I told him it was important that he goes,” Purdy said.

Davidson was thrilled to have a student not be afraid to try new things.

“I think Kyle is incredibly brave because we know that very often athletes and the music and theater kids aren’t always the same kids. I think that they can sometimes get pressure from their peers to pursue one activity and maybe not another,” Davidson said.

For MacDonald, it was a simple solution to not give up one activity for the other. “I guess in a way I like being unique, but it’s more just about me finding what I love and for a while I wasn’t sure that I could do both. I felt like I had to pick one or the other, but eventually I realized there is nothing wrong with doing everything that I want to do.”

MacDonald was a part of the 2019 Glenbrook Musical Matilda during his sophomore year of high school.

“It’s really great for our students to see you can do athletics and the arts and you can play football and you can also sing,” Davidson said.

MacDonald hopes to study musical theater in college after graduation.
