SENIOR YEAR PLANNING GUIDE
There are many facets to life after high school. Your ultimate post-high school goals may include education, full-time employment, living independently in the community, and having the problem solving skills to handle the demands of adult living.
Self-Determination: Critical Skill For Post-High School Success
- Students in a post-high school setting must believe their goals are achievable. They must know how to be successful and learn from negative situations. Adults make decisions, act independently, evaluate and modify performance in various situations and adjust goals and plans to improve performance or success. Knowing when to make adjustments to successfully meet one's goal is critical.

College Admissions Office Focus:
- Classes taken in high school: The strength and depth of your academic schedule can affect post-high school education and employment.
- Achievement in classes: Simply put, you should do the very best you can in each class you take.
- Test Scores: Practice - Review - Strategize
Make Goals Realistic but Optimistic!
- What schools offer the academic program(s) and degree that will lead to your career goal?
- Learn the requirements for admission to your selected school.
- Is the school within your budget?
- Consider the local community college and transferring later!
- Discuss your options with your parents and education team.
Senior Year Transition Timeline
- Know your academic strengths and challenges, and how they affect you in the classroom and community.
- Advocate your needs clearly and confidently.
- Continue actively participating and discussing your transition plan with your casemanager and education team.
- If your post-high school goal is to attend a 2 or 4-year college/university, your senior class schedule should be academically rigorous and align with your goals.
- If your post-high school goal is to attend a trade school or another post-secondary option, your senior schedule and experiences should be rigorous and align with your goals.
- Independently utilize the all-school academic supports and your class accommodations. Consider supports and services that you will need in post-secondary life.
- Volunteer or work at a location that will provide you exposure and involvement with potential career interests.
- If you are planning to retake the ACT/SAT, apply on-line and speak to your case manager about requesting accommodations ASAP.
- Apply to two or more of your preferred schools in September. This includes the on-line application, transcript, ACT/SATscore, a personal statement or essay and if required a letter of recommendation.
- Seek assistance on the application process with your parents, the College Career Center, guidance counselor, transition counselor, and casemanager.
- Attend post-secondary planning workshops and informational sessions.

- Learn about Department of Rehabilitation Services for all students with disabilities or history of a disability. Work with your school transitional and vocational coordinator/transition specialist/transition counselor on questions and applying to become a client.
