"GBS GOES GREEN" SCIENCE CONTEST - April 15, 2010
"GBS Goes Green" Science Contest was held on April 15, 2010. Teams of four students competed in six environmentally-focused events. Teams competed in five events during one period of the school day and one after school event. The 2010 events were:
- POLLUTION SOLUTION asks each team to make a set of environmental decisions.
- TOXIC ANATOMY requires teams to solve an environmentally related medical case using their knowledge of anatomy and physiology.
- TITRATION CONTAMINATION asks teams to solve a contamination crisis using titration.
- GO GREEN allows teams to apply Newton’s Laws and physics in a race.
- FERMI QUESIONS requires teams to make metric estimations about questions relating to improving our environment
- 'GOT WIND?' ENERGY CONTEST Using a standard CD and other materials, teams will build a windmill blade assembly that will generate the most electricity! Download the event description.

February 2010 - Women In Math & Science Breakfast
On Friday, February 12, 2010, Glenbrook South High School honored over 175 high achieving sophomore girls who have demonstrated top performance in math and science classes at GBS. This morning also serves as an opportunity to challenge these young women to consider pursuing a career in a math, science, or technical field. This event seeks to address the continued disproportionate number of women who pursue technical careers.
As a follow-up to this event, these girls are invited to participate in Oakton Community College’s SIT-SIMs career exploration day on Saturday morning, March 6, 2010. We trust that this will be an opportunity for several of these ladies to take the next step in considering if a career in the technical area may be in their future.
Girls honored at this event were Katie Albrecht, Mary Anderson, Megan Anderson, Patricia Antonakos, Stephanie Antonopoulos, Donna Bagdasarian, Huma Baig, Mackenzie Barnes, Alison Bertog, Meme Betadam, Samantha Bielanski, Sara Bilimoria, Taylor Brown, Tara Bucklin, Rachel Burns, Chuka Byambasuren, Kelsey Byers, Demi Chae, Vivian Chiang, Teresa Chirayil, Ellen Cho, Jae Kyung Choi, Gabriela Chuchro, Megan Connolly, Katie Cowhey, Madalyn Cregg, Allyson Cunningham, Cassie Czerkas, Ola Czyzewski, Nirali Dave, Danielle DeVito, Diana Diaconu, Maggie DiCesare, Jessie Dickman, Amanda Duncan, Camilla Dziura, Kelsey Eenigenburg, Natalie Elizaroff, Joanna Ewing, Jeanette Feldman, Hayley Flanagan, Melissa Flaxman, Kayla Forcey, Yvonne Forest, Emily Frothingham, Lauren Gabuzzi, Arielle Galang, Khishigdelger Ganbold, Nomin Gankhuyag, Ganchimeg Ganzorig, Noelle Gaumond, Lena Ghandour, Talia Gil, Becky Glover, Danielle Gorenyuk, Dorothy Grabowski, Anna Grzybowski, Suzana Gvero, Casey Hamilton, Rebecca Han, Julie Hanson, Eleni Haramaras, Allison Hardy, Kelli Hartfield, Caroline Heckler, Hallie Hengels, Taylor Henry, Lily Hicks, Anna Hirsch, Stephanie Hoker, Molly Holden, Fatima Hooda, CC Hoogland, Caley Howland, Andrea Huerta, Amelia Hummel, Shazia Hussein, Christina Im, Leanne Iorio, Sachi Ishida, Christine Jang, Ala Januszko, Melissa Jeanpoix, Eugenia Kang, Kleo Karamichos, Megan Karnig, Christine Kausal, Abby Keller, Kerry Kent, Bridget Kilpatrick, JoAnna Kim, Younga Kim-Kang, Natalie Kinzalow, Ashley Kipershtein, Kelsey Kiwaiko, Madelyn Kodros, Bella Krenzel, Theresa Kunnel, Rashma Kurian, Sylwia Kusiak, Nora Landri, Jessica Langer, Ji Eun Lee, Grace Lee, Alicia Lee, Michelle Lee, Joo Hee Lee, Stephanie Leinbach, Julie Lewis, Jackie Liebrandt, Mariah Lopez, Cynthia Lopez, Gina Lucia, Lindsay Lyhus, Marissa Macchiaroli, Lisa Mahon, Madeline Makhlouf, Reetu Maliekkal, Alissa Matsumoto, Chrystal Mattappillil, Sarah McCune, Colleen McDonagh, Libby Meadows, Aqsa Merchant, Angelica Moniak, Jung Hee Moon, Karolina Myrda, Claudia Nadolny, Tamara Nahhas, Mona Nazzal, Olivia Nelson, Rebecca Nelson, Elise Neuhaus, Daria Niescierowicz, Keely Nolan, Grace O’Gara, Narmandakh Otgonmunkh, Annie Palmerson, Hee Jin Park, Lindsay Park, Anneliese Paulson, Anneliese Petersen, Claire Plack, Vicki Powers, Michelle Przybylo, Mackenzie Rech, Stephanie Riley, Elexis Rodgers, Alexia Rougas, Hannah Russell, Kristen Ryan, Sneha Sabu, Nickey Sadeghi, Deena Saji, Joanne Schiele, Pooja Sivakumar, Sierra Smith, Emily Sparrow, Patty Stalonczyk, Alexandra Stark, Julia Steffen, Stephanie Stiglmeier, Jordan Synnestvedt, Rebecca Tiedmann, Beth Tomaszewski, Anna Veselovsky, Celine Villareal, Abby Watkins, Carson Weaver, Delaney Wharton, Samantha Wojtun, Grace Yi, Jessica Young, Joanne Zalatoris, Barbara Zawadski, Stephanie Ziegler, Jen Zucker, and Nicole Zygmunt.
