 Chem-Phys Honors 173 & 273

CHEM-PHYS HONORS 173

GRADE: 9/10/11 LENGTH: 2 SEM. This introductory accelerated chemistry and physics laboratory course stresses the development of problem-solving skills, accurate laboratory techniques, and careful data analysis.  Group project work is integral to this course. The two-year sequence confers one unit of honors credit in chemistry and one in physics.  Students completing this course will be well prepared for the Advanced Placement sciences. Physics topics include waves and optics, forces, momentum, potential and kinetic energy, and electricity. Chemistry topics include formulas and names, chemical equations, the mole concept, phase changes, solutions and molarity, atomic theory, atomic and molecular structure, chemical periodicity and energy concepts.  Prerequisite: Geometry 263 or its equivalent and departmental recommendation.

CHEM-PHYS HONORS 273

GRADE: 10/11 LENGTH: 2 SEM. This laboratory course is a continuation of Honors Chem-Physics 173. The topics emphasized in physics are forces, momentum, kinematics, vectors and projectiles, energy, static and current electricity and selected topics in modern physics. The chemistry portion covers systems in heat and thermodynamics, chemical kinetics, equilibrium, acid-base equilibria, electrochemistry, and topics in organic and biochemistry. This course will continue the emphasis on techniques used in data analysis and problem solving.  Prerequisite:  Chem-Phys 173.
