        The opening reception for the Glenbrook North Senior Art Show will be held from 3:00-6:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 16, Glenbrook North IMC.  Refreshments will be served.  The Art Department will be exhibiting a variety of works from senior art students in Ceramics, Photography, Drawing, Painting, Digital Art, and Graphic Design.  The exhibit will continue through March 22.  Teachers in the GBN Art Department include Lee Block, Justin Gerbich, and Rob Milkowski.

        The Glenbrook North Orchesis Dance Show will be presented at 7:30 p.m., Thursday through Saturday, March 11-13, Center for Performing Arts.  This year’s show, Surge, will feature jazz, tap, modern, ballet and hip-hop.  Tickets are $10 and may be purchased in advance or at the door.  Call 847-509-2524 for information.  The Orchesis show is produced by members of Junior and Senior Orchesis under the direction of Diane DeRosa-Reynolds. 

                 The Glenbrook North Booster Club is hosting its annual Spring Gala, Taste of Chicago, at 6:30 p.m., Saturday, March 13, Hilton Chicago-Northbrook.  All parents are welcome.  The event includes great food, a live and silent auction, games, prizes and the drawing of our Super Raffle winning ticket.  Please call Lauri Shamis, 847-498-5888, or Linda Weinstein, 847-272-7005, or e-mail gbnbooster@gmail.com.  Proceeds will help support GBN athletics.

         All interested Glenbrook students are welcome to attend a career fair, Career Pathway Showcase – Take the Steps to a Bright Future.  The Showcase will be held Monday, March 15, 6-9 p.m., at Glenbrook South High School, West Cafeteria, and is co-sponsored by Glenbrook Evening High School and Glenbrook South High School.  Representatives from 25 educational programs in fields such as nursing, HVAC, automotives, culinary, art, EMT, business, broadcasting, game design, web design, CAD and more will be available.  Representatives can describe their programs and answer student questions.  The purpose of the program is to showcase career opportunities for those students who do not desire to embark on a four-year college degree program at this point and who desire to begin their careers as soon as possible.  The Showcase is hosted by Melissa DeFrenza of Glenbrook Evening High School and Steve Kornick, Instructional Supervisor of Applied Technology/Business Education/Family & Consumer Sciences at GBS.  Attendees should park in the north lot.  Any questions about the Showcase, please call Melissa DeFrenza at 847-486-4709.

        A special meeting of the Glenbrook High School District 225 Board of Education will be held at 7:00 p.m., Monday, March 22.  Board Meetings are held in the Board Room, District Administration Building, 1835 Landwehr Road, Glenview, Illinois.  Detailed information about the meeting, the agenda and documents are available online at the District 225 website:  www.Glenbrook225.org, select Board of Education, select Electronic Board Packet.    

        The Glenbrook North junior college program, “Finding the Fit … Financially Speaking,” will be held at 7 p.m., Thursday, March 25, Center for Performing Arts.  Families of juniors will be provided with information that will assist them in gaining a better understanding of the impact that financing college will have on the college selection process.

        Glenbrook North High School has qualified six speech and debate students to the National Forensics League national debate and speech tournament, the Nationals, to be held June-13-18 in Kansas City.  In addition, Glenbrook North won the Sweepstakes trophy based on the combined results of debate and speech competition.  Over 200 students in the Northern Illinois District competed for the two top slots in debate and speech competitions to qualify for the national tournament.  The Northern Illinois District qualifying tournament was held March 5 and 6 at Glenbrook North High School; Greg Malis was the tournament director.  Students competed in four categories of debate and six categories of speech.   
        In Policy Debate, Vinay Sridharan and Alexis Shklar from GBN were one of the top two teams, thereby qualifying for Nationals.  Flynn Makuch and Alex Pappas were among the top five teams at the tournament.  In Lincoln-Douglas debate, Pat Donovan qualified, and in Public Forum Debate, Josh Wolken and Adam Wolken qualified.  Michael Greenstein is the head debate coach.          
        In speech events, Melissa Lee-Litowitz qualified in International Extemporaneous Speaking.  Alma Nicholson is the head speech coach for GBN.

        The spring sports season has begun and approximately 800 GBN students are participating.  The spring sports and their head coaches are:  Dave Weber for Badminton; Barry Ruppert for Baseball; Ryan Dul for Boys Gymnastics; Justin Georgacakis for Boys Lacrosse; Tom Rosenbaum for Girls Lacrosse; Paul Vignocchi for Girls Soccer; Jenn Mau for Softball; Jeff Jordan for Boys Tennis; Ron Gatchalian for Girls Track; Matt Purdy for Boys Track; Chris Cooper for Boys Volleyball and Mark Rebora and Robin Walker for Boys and Girls Water Polo. 


        The Glenbrook Symphony Orchestra Spring Concert will be held at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 24 at Glenbrook North High School, Center for Performing Arts.  The GSO is comprised of students selected by audition from Glenbrook North and Glenbrook South High Schools.  The concert will feature Danse Bacchanale - Camille Saint-Saëns as well as three solo performances by the 2010 Concerto Competiton winners:  John Caputo, clarinet, Clarinet Concerto by Mozart, Tom Chen, piano, Piano Concerto No. 3 by Beethoven and Eric Murgala, violin, Violin Concerto No. 2 by Henryk Wieniawski.  The concert is free and open to the public.

        Math students, senior Brian Freidin, juniors Jason Hirshman, Ho Hyun Sun, and Ho Jin Sun, and sophomore Adam Sandler, all were selected to be part of the Chicago Area All-Star Math Teams.  These teams represent all of Northern Illinois and will compete nationally at the University of Iowa in June.


        Three Glenbrook North GADGET students, Thomas (Greg) Coogan (senior), Lynette Sugatan (Junior), and Yasmine Yousef (senior), who entered the Pete Conrad Spirit of Innovation Competition, have been selected as one of six national finalist teams in the Space Nutrition category.  As a result, they have been invited to travel to the Mattson Corporation headquarters and manufacturing plant in Foster City, California to produce 80 one ounce bars for the final phase of the competition.   
        Two days of their trip will be spent at Mattson, where the students will work to refine their nutrition bar and submit a production quality batch for final judging.  Students will work with a team of food scientists in product development lab to convert their original formula to industrial food grade ingredients ready to go to a commercial food plant.  They will use industrial analytical equipment to analyze and improve their product.  
        The students will later travel to NASA Ames Research Center for the Pete Conrad Spirit of Innovation Summit in early April with another GADGET finalist team for the awards presentation, present their ideas to world level venture capitalists, angel investors, business leaders, and scientists.  Selected teams will receive funding to continue the development of their products and may go on to participate in The Portal, where they may choose to patent their product and have an opportunity to enter the commercial marketplace.  Physics/astronomy teacher Lynne Zielinski is the teacher advisor for GADGET.
