ABOUT GBN PRESCHOOL
We are a laboratory preschool, located within Glenbrook North High School. We have a well-equipped preschool classroom with materials that promote independence, problem-solving skills, pro-social skills, language skills, large/small muscle coordination, and a positive self concept. We also have a child sized toilet and sink as well as an extensive playground with sandbox. There is one certified teacher in the classroom at all times with high school students rotating in throughout the day to assist.
HOW IS GBN PRESCHOOL DIFFERENT THAN OTHER PRESCHOOLS?
One advantage to being located inside a high school is that we have access to all the facilities and have the opportunity to do educational "in-school" field trip. We have visited the autos departments during a unit on transportation, we played in our gymnastics gymnasium during a circus unit and we visit the GBN library monthly to read and check out books. At Halloween, we go trick or treating, visiting different departments throughout our school. We have also participated in GBN's annual Homecoming assembly and parade. GBN preschool is also a great place to find responsible babysitters. Our child development students create a bond with the preschoolers and are often looking for part time work.
HOW DOES A PRESCHOOL FIT INTO THE HIGH SCHOOL SETTING?
Being a part of a higher learning community, our presence in the high school serves an important purpose for the high school students. There is no better way to learn about children than by observing and interacting with children. These students are interested in a child-related career, so our preschool program provides them with the opportunity to work with children in a relaxed and supportive environment. Our preschool classroom is equipped with an observation area that has a 1 way mirror and speakers so observers can see and hear the preschoolers without the intrusiveness of being in the classroom, watching the students. Only child development students, psychology students and preschool parents are allowed in the observation area. GBN students enrolled in Introduction to Human Growth and Development, the first level of the child development program, observe in our observation area and help out in the classroom on a rotating basis twice a week. GBN students enrolled in Educational Foundations, the second level of the child development program, teach lessons approved by the preschool teacher twice a week. These lessons are based on the current theme and supplement the curricular areas of art, math, science, reading and writing. At the end of the semester, these students teach all-day under the supervision of the preschool teacher.
WHAT WILL MY CHILD LEARN?
Our curriculum is play-based with a focus on socialization. The most important aspect of preschool is the development social skills, a skill that we use for the rest of our lives. We teach problem solving, conflict resolution and expressing one’s self in an appropriate and effective manner. The preschool teacher creates a yearly theme calendar based around the interests of the children and the changes we see around us during seasons. Within each theme we practice math, reading, writing, science, social studies, art and cooking. We also focus on the academics of letter recognition (letter of the week), printing letters, shapes, colors, rote counting, understanding quantities of more, less and equal, and understanding time by reviewing a daily schedule and discussing the concept of yesterday, today and tomorrow and pre-reading skills. To enhance our reading comprehension, we have bi-weekly Scholastic readers that are small newspapers that focus on one of the above academic areas.
