SOPHOMORE PLANNING GUIDE

 

Your success in post-high school education depends on your ability to manage yourself and your life situation.

Learning About Yourself

  • Academic preparation, and specifically the rigor of your high school coursework, is the primary consideration for admission to most colleges and universities.  All students have unique individual needs.  Finding the right educational fit involves more than meeting entrance requirements.  As you begin thinking about your options, ask yourself if the school environment is a place you can be successful academically, emotionally, and socially?  Critical points in the transition process:
  • High school course work (rigor)
  • High school grades (GPA)
  • Standardized test scores
  • Co-Curricular involvement
  • Community service activities
  • Work experience
  • Self-Advocate/Self-Awareness

Getting Started!

  • Research your goals.
  • Learn the requirements for achieving your post-high school goals.
  • Is your goal achieveable?
  • Work with your educational team to create an IEP that aligns wiht your post-high school transition goals.  

Sophomore Year Transition Timeline

  • Learn the specific nature of your disability, how it affects you in the classroom and community and how to explain it so others will understand your needs.  Consider services and supports that you will need in post-secondary life.  
  • Continue actively participating in your IEP transition planning with you casemanager and IEP team.
  • Prepare academically by carefully planning your course of study.  Use your course of study and your progress in class to set and adjust your post-high school goals.
  • Explore career options with a member of your educational team and visit the college career center.
  • Complete an interest inventory and career assessment independently or if necessary with a career counselor (Naviance or Career Cruising).
  • Take the PLAN Test and review the results with your educational team.
  • Speak with college representatives who visit GBN and/or at college fairs.
  • Investigate summer pre-college programs at www.heath.gwu.edu
  • Meet with guidance counselor about courses required for target colleges or career training schools.  Also work with the transition counselor and casemanager, and other resources.
  • Join a club, team or volunteer in the community.
