 GBN & GBS Construction Projects

GBN Update – November 2007
Construction is underway on the three main projects that make up Glenbrook North’s Phase I of construction/renovation projects: the “F” wing or two-story addition and lobby/entrance, the music area and the fitness center.
  • Following demolition of the one-story business wing on the south side of the building, construction has begun on the two-story addition and new lobby/entrance.
  • In the approximate middle of the school, construction is underway in the music area. During this first phase, a new band room and a new orchestra room will be built; during phase II, the rest of the music area will be renovated.
  • Construction of the fitness center has also begun.

Phase I construction projects are scheduled to be completed July 2008.

Note: Life Safety/infrastructure projects will be addressed during both Phase I and II. Renovation/construction projects were enumerated during the referendum.

GBS Update-November 2007
Construction has begun on the Phase II exterior additions:

  • Three classrooms (will be constructed in present weight room)
  • Practice gym
  • Swimming pool
  • Fitness Center (combine relocated weight room and cardiovascular equipment)

Phase I - Interior renovation projects at GBS began in June and are completed. These projects include:

  • Science Lab renovations – brings old science labs to current science standards and increases science enrollment capacity to meet student needs. These labs are all in use.
  • Kitchen/Cafeteria renovation provides improved service, increases capacity, and facilitates offering a greater variety of fresh food options. Ten food service stations are available so students can get through lines quickly and have adequate time to relax and eat lunch. Two cafeteria areas are available to students, the smaller area can accommodate the freshman class and the larger area accommodates all other students. The faculty cafeteria is scheduled for completion in October.
  • Orchestra Room asbestos removal and renovation completed. The renovation transformed the room into a bright, fully functioning orchestra room with adequate acoustics and the ability to rehearse on the same level so musicians can “hear the sound” as it will ultimately be performed.
  • The dean’s office area was reconfigured to better serve students and staff. The attendance and guidance areas are linked to the dean’s office and a new welcome area in the guidance area facilitates student and parent use.
  • The expanded Student Activities Center is in use and has become a hub of activity. The Center supports the wide range of opportunities available to GBS students in student government, community service, after-school clubs and activities. It provides valuable meeting and planning space for students.

Renovation/construction projects were enumerated during the referendum.

Planning
Following passage of the referendum, extensive planning of space, layout and design of the projects enumerated in the referendum have been going on. Teams of teachers, students, administration, board members and community members have participated. For example, teams have gone to other area schools to see their lunchrooms and student activity areas. Cost control, quality control and best use of space to serve programs and students are the driving forces behind the projects.

Dr. Craig Schilling, Assistant Superintendent for Business, has been coordinating the overall planning in conjunction with the facilities committee, including Principals Mike Riggle at GBN and Brian Wegley at GBS, and board members Bob Boron and Skip Shein. Each school has a core team to plan and review its projects. Glenbrook Operations Director Kim Ptak serves as a Construction Coordinator reporting to Dr. Schilling.

Architect
Arcon & Associates, Inc., Lombard, Illinois. Well known in the field of school construction, Arcon was the architect for the additions and remodeling of numerous local schools including: Maine East and Maine West High Schools, Conant, Fremd, Hoffman, Palatine, Schaumburg High Schools, Lake Park High Schools/east and west campuses, and Willow Springs School. They designed the 2002 GBS and GBN additions and renovations, plus prior renovations and extensive Life Safety projects at the Glenbrooks. Because of their long-standing relationship with the Glenbrook High Schools, their architecture fee to Glenbrook is 6.75% instead of the usual 7.5% fee. Average fees for school construction are 7.25- 7.5%. Arcon’s familiary with our buildings is as important; Dr. Craig Schilling notes, “No one knows our buildings better than ARCON.”

Because of the extent of the projects, the desire to work on both schools simultaneously and complete all projects by January 2009, Arcon has taken a team approach. Four architectural/design teams are at work, two for each school. This allows maximum attention to each area for design development, bidding and costs, and follow-through throughout the construction process.

Construction Management Firm
Henry Brothers is the construction management firm for the Glenbrook South projects and Nicholas & Associates is the construction management firm for the Glenbrook North projects. Each of these firms will oversee construction and contractors for the duration of the projects. Each firm has worked effectively and successfully with Glenbrook North and Glenbrook South in the past and is a cost-effective way to assure the quality of the construction process.
